Book Review! My Shot by Elena Delle Donne

One little word can lite up someones day. -Ainsley

Elena Delle Donne is a WNBA MVP and Olympic Gold Medalist. When Elena was in high school, she got a scholarship to play basketball with one of the top schools in the country, UConn. But, when she got there, she knew that she didn't feel the love for basketball that she had since she fist picked up a basketball. Elena decided that she was going to walk away from her scholarship, and go home to her parents and her sister Lizzie.

Lizzie is 6 years older than Elena. She was born blind and deaf. A little after Lizzie went home from the hospital, she was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. When Lizzie was a toddler, they found out that she also had autism. Lizzie can only communicate through hand-over-hand signing. Elena loves her sister and was missing being able to sit next to her, or hold her hand.

She attended University of Delaware so she could be closer to her family. Elena played volleyball for a year. She started to realize that she was missing basketball. After watching a few games she called her friend and asked if she wanted to go shoot hoops. The moment she shot the first basket she knew she wanted to start playing, but she was concerned that she would start playing and burn out again. She started taking long walks in the woods. One day, she started getting major body aces and headaches, and she knew something was not right. Later, she found out she has Lyme disease from a tick bite. Elena went to a Lyme disease specialist and got supplements and a personalized treatment plan. Elena started to feel better and after 3 months she was back to playing basketball.

She played for the Blue Hens college basketball team. They went to the Sweet 16. She was the second overall selection in the 2013 WNBA draft. Elena played for Chicago Sky for many years, and met her wife Amanda in Chicago. To be closer to her family, she decided to play for the Washington Mystics.

I give this book 5 stars!
